Teaching Enamel Classes in Vancouver by Patsy Kolesar

I had the pleasure of teaching my first enamelling class last week! Teaching is something that has been on my to-do list for a couple of years now and I finally had the right opportunity to try it out.  I had the honour of teaching a pretty amazing woman, Salem has a business in Ethiopia called Salem's Designs.  She employ's other artisans who make jewellery, textiles, pottery, and basketry.  She has a large space in Addis Ababa where people can go and watch the artists work and also purchase one of the beautiful pieces.  Salem is invested in the art of handmade and in offering skill teaching and employment to artisans in Ethiopia.  She's pretty inspiring to talk to and caught on to the enamelling techniques really quickly.  Below is a photo of the pieces she made with me.

I will slowly be sharing photos here from the exhibition of one-of-a-kind rings that we had in June at Visual Space Gallery.  The pieces made for the exhibition were just amazing!

Eastside Culture Crawl 2013 by Patsy Kolesar

Like the beautiful remnants of fabric that fall on the cutting room floor, these pieces were left behind from our Jewellery + Artists + Collaboration group’s Medea project.  We couldn’t leave them on the floor. So we’ve made them into a very small line of limited edition ready to wear jewellery available only at our studios during the Eastside Culture Crawl.  The Onion Studio 1103 Union Street and The Mergatroid Studio at 975 Vernon.

No Mud, No Lotus Necklace by Patsy Kolesar

When I was in Holland at my jewelry artists residency last spring there was a small pond in our backyard. It was muddy, murky, filled with gross bugs and green slime.  I didn't pay too much attention to it, it hadn't been cared for for some time. Until perfect pink lotus flowers started to blossom in it. It captivated me.  I had new respect for the murky pond, new wonder and fascination.  I would sit in front of it and notice how the lotus flowers opened and closed.  I would notice how the bugs interacted with the flowers, I would notice how the plant life was so alive in the mud.......
